And so visiting preachers can stay THERE and give classes THERE and so between travelling preachers kirtan and pravachand still go on THERE in the same place , giving continuity for devotees and new people .And so when devotees are distributing books /outreaching etc they can direct people to the nearest center for association .
And so our local sangas have a focal point , a meeting place , a refuge ,a place to rejuvenate and refuel, a sense of identity , a club house and a place to socialise

It would be nice if advanced devotees in "bhakti" could assist devotees personally or by e-mail in their conceivement of devotional service . During the festival in Italy it could be noticed that the devotees were eager to understand the spiritual topics but it was difficult for them to follow. So we need to have advanced devotees who are able to guide devotees from that point of life where they are to understand the path back to Godhead. Especially for new devotees from the West it might be a cultural shock to see the truth by the mercy of our gurudev. There might be many questions but they might feel shy or afraid to ask. Advanced devotees are needed for this matter. Kanishta-adhikaris could be too "narrow-minded" to guide.
I myself would like to do this service.

Sannyasis and other travelling preachers stay a little longer, like a couple of weeks or a month or so, in each place.
Even if the longer stays are just for four months of the year, say at Chaturmasya, and for the rest of the year they make short stops...
This would help build communities, based on relationships.
create some kind of Counseling or Devotee Care Group to guide the newly initiated regardless whether they are from another existing Vaishnava org.
peta has a free vegetarian starter kit at goveg,org, which is basically a piece of literature, so we need a free hare krishna starter kit, jai!

Srila Gurudeva :-”It was mentioned earlier that smarana is the primary limb of raganuga-bhakti. But one should understand that smarana is dependent on kirtana. In the present age of Kali, it is the practice of kirtana that grants the eligibility to enter into bhajana, because as all the sastras proclaim, kirtana has monarchy over all the other limbs of bhakti and bestows the highest result.”
So we need somewhere[ in each location ] where Kirtan is going on at least at mangala arati and sundar arati every day ,so devotees can join the kirtan and remember Krishnas pastimes .Thats the bottom line :- congegational chanting= smaran of krishna’s lilas = Bhakti.And so if Bhakti is increasing in our sangha our society will automatically become more functional
Pretty much the math program or Prabhupads “iskcon sandwich’ [full morning and evening program with Guru seva in between ] needs to be actively advocated , facilitated , implemented, and maintained and supported whatever the cost
Most humans are social beings and need to belong to an identifiable cultural group and attend cultural activities at THEIR cultural center .Now a large proportion of Srila Gurudvas disciples in this area {Murwillumbah]have either re joined mainstrem society or regularly attend ISKcon.Thats the increasingly heavy cost of not establishing our own public places of worship – we gradually loose more and more of our members ..

Srila Prabhupada encouraged us to create self sufficient farming communities like this. I would love to fulfill his vision. Once we create the home-space for those of us who live there, we would open the center up for retreats, seminars and music festivals, and invite people from around the world to come and experience Krishna consciousness and unity of faith between religions. Would be willing to create this anywhere in the world if it's rural. Need 5 - 25 acres. With or without building/house. We can use yurts, domes and mobile homes.

for me is as simple as a family conception :)
Our family business is The Market Place of the Holy Name ..Sanyassis/travelling preachers are like travelling sales men ,Preaching centers are like retail stores .Our family business will not grow in a balanced way until as much emphasis is put on the retail stores as the travelling sales persons .

each van being equiped with...good sound system, books,mridanga/katrtels and facility to cook alot of prassadam and some enthusiastic devotees.
instant mini festivals could manifest very quickly with a setup like this...devotees could travel throughout europe and the americas.
yes these programs have existed before...but these days we have instant communication...so all devotees and friends could assemble together when the "sankirtan roadshow" hits your town...i'm saving for my van now...the rest is down to the flute player

We just saw the new video of Srila Gurudeva speaking to Yasaodanadana Prabhu about the new society
quote:-" Yasodanadana dasa: You asked me to set up the Society. Why the Society, Gurudeva?
Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja: If there is no society, everyone will be separated. They will scatter here and there; there will be no control."
A controversial point no doubt , but open strait-forward communication should help .
"missunderstanding is like poison" :-Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada
Every society gives some benefits to its members [or they wont stay] and in return those members have some duties and obligations to the society [or the society will reject or discipline them].To derive those benefits we willingly come under the control of that society in respect to fulfilling our debt of duty and seva [in return for the things the society does for us ].
So as I understand Gurudeva the society is there to benefit us and control us so we are not separated [ from sat sanga] and scatter here and there [doing asat sanga] .
Srila Gurudeva has repeatedly ordered the Bhakti Trust and Sanyassis -- make a society to benefit the devotees who voluntarily come under its control .
Not just them, but generally, Srila Gurudeva has requested /ordered us to do for him like what Swami Maharajas disciples did for Prabupada .Many times - so that order has come to many many of us directly.
So those that take up the order [without ulterior motives]will be empowered to do it .And those that are taking it to heart and doing the needful , we should not be envious of them ,but rather joyfully assist them .
Our independence is whether to make a society or not ,or take shelter of Srila Gurudevas Society or not .Whether we want to be controlled [by Guru and Krishna } or remain independent .

Haribol devotees,
Dandavat pranama.
I am Bhadra dasi from New Zealand, and my family and I have been involved in the development of a sustainable community for years. We have a six acre rural property in the Bay of Plenty. We do not have enough land for others to come and live on our property, since there are seven of us here already. But we very much want other followers of Srila Gurudeva—those sincere about growing in bhakti and growing as people, and with an interest in developing a lifestyle alternative to the Kali cult (such as producing our own food, educating our own children, etc)—to come and settle in the area. There is much rural land for sale all around the area. Unfortunately it is expensive, but with the present slump in real estate, properties which have been on the market for years without selling, will likely sell for much less than their advertised price.
To make it possible for devotees to get land, we would like to see devotees do what Narayana dasa and I did fifteen years ago: pool resourses with several other devotee families, buy a large block of land, then have it subdivided, so each family has their own land at a fraction the cost of buying land of the same size without this type of arrangement. This creates devotee neighbourhood.
There is at least one couple here in New Zealand who would be keen to buy land in our area with another family or families. We just need more keen devotees.
This vision is not for the "faint hearted", you could say. Appeal is to devotees who have their heart set on setting and building the foundations, over the next few decades, for an alternative culture to the present day Kali-yuga mainstream; a culture which is considerably more bhava-anukula (favourable for the development of bhakti). Our Srila Prabhupada had visions like this, and wanted them to develop. Needed for this, are those who are keen to pioneer this cultural idea, and face the challenges involved to do the work necessary to make inroads into it, for the benefit of our future generations, and as a project for them to continue developing.
I believe New Zealand is an ideal place. It is a little cut off from the rat-race of the rest of the world. It is relatively politically calm, and crime rate is not high. There is huge potential here for agrarian development. The climate is moderate. The scenery is extremely beautiful, everywhere. The land is nearly all coastal, because New Zealand is just two (or three) islands.
And of all parts of New Zealand, I feel our area, the Bay of Plenty, is the best. It hosts one of New Zealand's biggest harbours and its ninth biggest city, so there is opportunity for outreach. As its name suggests, all fruits, vegetables and herbs grow prolifically here. The area is well-watered, with many pure water streams coming down from the mountain range called the Kaimais (of which our land is in the foothills). We have one such stream going through our property, and we draw all our water from it.
The nearby town is called Katikati, which in Sanskrit means 'millions and millions.'
Millions and millions of:
* Nagar-sankirtanas in the streets
* Nama-hatta programs
* Hari katha festivals
* Prasadam outlets
* Children being educated in a loving Krsna-conscious atmosphere
* Protected cows giving milk
* Japa retreats
* Devotee-managed acreages growing fruit and vegies
* Devotee health practitioners producing medicines from pure ingredients, and training others.
* Devotee businesses, giving employment to other devotees
* Cottage industries, offering barter trade
* Higher-educated, brahminical and skilled devotees training and educating other devotees
* Etc, etc
Although I have been giving thought to this kind of culture for nearly two decades now, I don't have all or many of these concepts thought out in detail. We would love like-minded devotees to come to this area, buy some land together, and put heads together as to how to develop this vision.
It is my opinion that these sorts of visions, turned into hands-on projects, should be developed by devotees all over the world. If it were possible, perhaps devotees with money could buy up areas of good rural land, subdivide them and sell off lots to devotees at cost price.
If we are going to develop a society, a foundation in communities like this—call them neighbourhoods if you prefer—is needed. (I am not overlooking the fact that the only real foundation for each individual and each Vaisnava community and society, is the chanting of the holy name and the performance of bhajana; that goes without saying; but here I refer to practical foundation for phyiscal sustenance, maintenance and well-being, of a bhava-anukula nature). We can start by beginning to produce our own food together, and educating our own children together: two paramount moves for side-stepping the Kali cult and instigating our own pure society.
I would like to see more devotees getting interested in this, and spreading interest to others.
The fiat monetary system on which the Kali cult is built—our much needed dollar—will become completely worthless at some date in the (perhaps very near) future. We need to start nutting out an alternative culture, a culture governed by our Gurudevas.

First of all I offer my dandavat pranaams at the lotus feet of my beloved Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja.
All glories to Sri Sri Radha Govinda! All Glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga!
Srila Gurudeva wrote to me two years ago when I was organising a workshop called co-operation for a common purpose here in Auckland New Zealand. He had a message for the devotees attending:
“Take 100 % responsibility for your services and
respect each other and not think you are the master of others”
How could I help encourage devotees to take %100 responsibility for their seva?
When I thought deeply about it and did some research on the relationships in traditional hierarchical management models, I learned that control flows downward and responsibility flows upwards. In other words traditional hierarchical models do not encourage devotees to take responsibility for their seva.
I think an understanding of this is important for volunteer organisations such as ours. Volunteer organisations have few channels to give punishment and reward for wanted or unwanted behaviour. One of the challenges that volunteer organisations such as ours face, is how to inspire and encourage members to work for the organisations purpose. Srila Gurudeva often says we should be controlled by love. Is seva done within a hierarchical management system/ in other words for a reward or to avoid a punishment, being controlled by love?
What are other organisations similar to ours are doing to inspire their sanga?
From my study two examples stood out clearly:
• The local Christian Mega Church
• The Loft – a preaching initiative that Sita Pati prabhu a disciple of Devamrta Swami pioneered in Australia and New Zealand (Many of the devotees currently moving into ISCKON temples and distributing books have come through the Loft. I also came to KC through the Loft programme)
The common denominator among these two successful organisations was their management model – they had network models for leadership. Their decentralised models focussed on engaging and empowering everyday people to mobilise their skills and energy to serve a particular purpose.
Focus around purpose and not people or position
The network model does not mean there are no leaders. On the contrary it empowers hundreds of leaders to contribute their skills. What it doesn’t have are ‘formal positions’ which tend to encourage people to jockey to fill a position and then relax (or corrupt) into once they achieve that position.
There is a lot more too this idea that you could read about in The Starfish and the Spider
http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=be_4LRyepS8C&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false. I don’t see that this model of management interferes with the spiritual principles of the Guru and disciple relationship in our Sampradaya. I think as a leadership model we could learn from, and possibly join the unstoppable expansion of organisations that use this leadership model.
It aligns with Seva Teams: the first step by giving:
“members and groups of members the authority and self-confidence to be self-directing within the framework of Srila Gurudeva’s instructions and mission; i.e. send the message that initiative is expected and desired.”
And also with Srila Prabhupada’s statement “That is the art of management: to draw out spontaneous loving spirit of sacrificing some energy for Krishna.”
Perhaps this leadership model will help us become unstoppable in spreading Krishna Consciousness, especially in Western contexts. Perhaps it could help us serve srila gurudevas message to “take 100 % responsibility your services".

... "The institutions and culture of a distinct self-perpetuating group"...
we need to define our culture.. and it needs to be monitored and maintained by rules or policies or we ARE NOT A SOCIETY BY DEFINITION.
A society ALWAYS has standard rules that apply ACROSS THE BOARD that are to be followed for it to operate smoothly. As a corollary, if one doesn't want to follow the rules in his society, then in general that "society" will then ask them that maybe they should go elsewhere.
For example.... It seems at the moment LA Temple acts completely independently. EVERYONE knows what a Temple is for (the deities, and a place for those in saffron to take shelter and serve the deities and Guru). However this is not the case. I was told by LA temple "sorry" today, "we are too full!" I know there are hardly ANY saffrons in the entire USA, so my question is.. is that really a temple? What is going on there??? Where am I supposed to go?
I feel as a "society" we should have policies, rules etc in place that govern important things like our temples etc... if there is no standardization, if there are no policies or rules.. how can we be called a "society"...
Honestly we are such a hotch potch!!
Please, Please, Please... let's finally get this together after 14 years!!!
